UNC Charlotte Student Voting Guide to the 2026 NC Midterm Elections

As the 2026 North Carolina Midterm Elections approach on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, UNC Charlotte students have a key opportunity to shape local, state, and national policy. Here is what you need to know:

Key Election Dates & Deadlines

  • Friday, October 9, 2026 (5:00 PM): Deadline to register to vote
  • Thursday, October 15- Saturday, October 31, 2026: In-person Early Voting 
  • Tuesday, October 20, 2026 (5:00 PM): Deadline to request an absentee ballot.
  • Tuesday, November 3, 2026 (6:30 AM- 7:30 PM): Election Day. If you are in line by 7:30 PM, stay in line! You are legally entitled to cast your ballot.

Missed the October 9 Registration Cutoff? You can still register and vote on the same day during the Early Voting window (Oct 15-31) at any Early Voting location in your county. Same-day registration is not available on Election Day.

How to Vote in Charlotte

  • During Early Voting (Oct 15-31): You can cast your ballot at any designated Early Voting site in Mecklenburg County. The closest site to campus is the Former University City Library location at 301 E. W.T. Harris Blvd. Other nearby options include the Mallard Creek Recreation Center and Eastway Regional Recreation Center.
  • By Absentee Ballot: Here are directions for voting by mail in NC. SLS can witness or notarize your absentee ballot during walk-in hours on the dates listed below:
    • Mondays: October 5, October 19, and October 26, 2-3pm HRL Hub in Wilson Hall
    • Tuesdays: October 6, October 20, and October 27, 2-3pm, Student Legal Services Office
  • On Election Day (Nov 3): You must vote at your specific assigned home precinct polling location. Use the NC State Board of Elections Voter Search Tool online to locate your designated polling place.

Photo ID Requirements: What IDs Work for Students?

North Carolina law requires voters to show an acceptable photo ID when checking in at the polls.

Accepted Photo IDs Include:

  1. UNC Charlotte Student Photo ID (Physical card).
  2. NC Driver's License or DMV Non-Operator ID.
  3. U.S. Passport or Passport Card.
  4. Out-of-State Driver's License (Valid only if you registered to vote in NC within 90 days of the election).
  5. Free NC Voter Photo ID Card (Issued by any county board of elections).
  6. U.S. Military, Veteran, or Tribal Photo IDs.

What If You Don't Have or Forgot Your Photo ID? No eligible voter will be turned away. You can vote in person regardless of whether you have your ID on hand:

  1. If You Don't Have an ID: You can complete an ID Exception Form at the polling place claiming a reasonable impediment (such as lack of transportation, lost ID, work/school conflict, or natural disaster) and cast a provisional ballot.
  2. If You Forgot Your ID at Home: You can cast a provisional ballot, but you must bring an acceptable photo ID to your county board of elections office by 12:00 PM on the fifth business day after Election Day for your vote to count (November 10th).
